NAMI PA, Main Line News and Offerings
 

The Havertown NAMI Family Support Group is a free, confidential and safe group of families helping other families who live with mental health challenges. In this support group, families join a caring group of individuals helping one another by utilizing their collective lived experiences and learned wisdom. Family members can achieve a renewed sense of hope for their loved one living with mental health challenges.  The group meets on Tuesday, April 18, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Llanerch (211 Lansdowne Rd. in Havertown, PA 19083).  For more information, please contact Nora at nora@huntjohnson.org.

NAMI PA, Main Line presents: Severe Mental Illness and Recovery – First-Person Accounts by Individuals who are in Recovery and Family Members. This event will take place on Sunday, April 23, 2-4 p.m. at Ardmore Presbyterian Church, 5 West Montgomery Avenue in Ardmore. The speakers will describe their lived experience with mental illness and recovery and answer your questions. Panel members in recovery live with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Family members will present the perspective of a mother and a husband. We will begin with a brief business meeting. We will host our third annual local awareness-raising, fund-raising walk, Main Line NAMI on the Move – Stepping out for Mental Health Awareness 2017 on Saturday morning, May 20 rain or shine. We hope you will join us for this family-friendly outreach and fund-raising walk. Registration is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at Bryn Mawr Community Center Park (9 S. Bryn Mawr Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010), which is next to Ludington Library. The walk will be a 5K loop on Lancaster Avenue, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with a 1K option if you prefer. To register or to donate to the walk, go to http://namipamainline.dojiggy.com.

Feature of the Week: Pennsylvania System of Care

Working at the state, county, and individual levels in Pennsylvania, the PA System of Care (SOC) Partnership brings youth, families, systems and supports together to find effective and efficient strategies that improve outcomes for youth and their families. In particular, they focus on the needs of 8 – 18 year-olds and their families, who have complex behavioral health challenges along with involvement in the juvenile justice and/or child welfare system(s) and who are in, or at risk of out-of-home placement. The State Leadership and Management Team that governs the SOC is interested in hearing from counties, youth, and families about ways to enhance SOC involvement throughout Pennsylvania. One way of gathering input is through the County Assessment Survey. All survey responses will be kept strictly confidential and results will be shared with state and local leadership teams but not published.The online version of the 2017 County Assessment accomodates both English speakers and Spanish speakers. The Pennsylvania Treasury Department is offering 2 webinars in April to help learn about the important features and benefits of PA Able. A PA ABLE Savings Program account gives individuals with qualified disabilities (Eligible Individuals), and their families and friends, a tax-free way to save for a wide range of disability-related expenses, while maintaining government benefits. The state and federal tax-free investment options are offered to encourage Eligible Individuals and their families to save private funds to support health, independence, and quality of life.Some of the topics that we will discuss include: eligibility requirements for opening a PA ABLE account, the federal and state tax benefits of PA ABLE, and how PA ABLE account interacts with current benefits.
